Bathtub installation often happens as part of a larger bathroom remodeling project. The tub is set during the rough-in phase, before the surround and tile go up. The installation includes positioning the tub, connecting the drain and overflow, leveling it, and securing it to the framing.

Bathtubs come in several types: alcove tubs that fit between three walls, drop-in tubs that sit in a framed surround, freestanding tubs that stand alone, and corner tubs. The type affects the installation. A freestanding tub needs floor plumbing. An alcove tub needs wall framing. We plan the installation around the tub type.

A new tub installation needs plumbing rough-in. That includes the drain, the overflow, and the supply lines for the tub spout and showerhead if the tub has a shower. If the tub is going where there was not one before, new drain and supply lines need to be run.

After the tub is set, the surround goes up. A tiled surround ties into bathroom tile installation. The surround protects the wall from water and finishes the area around the tub. The tile interface between the tub and the wall needs to be sealed properly.

Bathtub installation is not the same as bathtub replacement. Replacement removes an existing tub and puts a new one in its place. Installation covers adding a tub where there was not one, or installing a tub as part of a new bathroom. The two services overlap when a replacement is part of a remodel.
